Wisdom teeth extraction's a pain in the patootie
Right now, my gums are still bothering me. It's been over a week since I had my wisdom teeth extracted, and the pain is still getting to me. There's no infection, but it hurts so much. Stupid, impacted teeth. I should've gotten them out years ago when it was recommended. I feel like I've been popping Motrin like candy (not really, I take the recommended dose).

The oral surgeon put some dressing in the wounds to help alleviate some of the pain, but I don't think it's working anymore. It feels like a pain combination of cold sores, of too much tart taste, and of the aftereffects of chewing a really stale piece of bread. It's so bad, it's starting to wake me in the middle of the night.

Thank goodness I'm seeing the doc tomorrow. Maybe taking out the dressing will help. Otherwise, I don't know what I'll do. I refuse to take anymore Vicodin. The side effects were terrible. I hope the pain subsides a lot tomorrow. Sleepy-and-in-pain Anne is no good at work disciplining kids and running groups. =(

Owie! I hope your gums are feeling better soon. I had my upper wisdom teeth removed back in '99, and my PCP told me beforehand that using arnica montana gel would help keep bruising to a minimum (I tend to bruise easily), and might also alleviate some of the pain and swelling. I used it right after surgery - I just rubbed a bit on my cheeks every once in a while - and I think it did help. You might want to check it out as an alternative, since you don't want to take more Vicodin. Of course, you'd want to double check with your doctor or the dentist/oral surgeon who worked on you first. Until you get better, I guess you have a good excuse to eat lots of ice cream! ;-)

Thanks for the info. I forgot the name of it when I went to the oral surgeon to ask. Maybe I'll ask my MIL if she knows of any good remedies, too.

Ice cream is great. Haven't had much lately because it's hard justify having it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. =P

I Had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out about 6 weeks ago. and I was in sever pain for the 1st week (was on 2 types of strong pain killers, and anti-biotics, and had one of those pain killers that go up your bum.
the 2nd week i was still very swollen, and was off the very strong pain killers but still taking regular doses of normal pain killers.
a Month later I went to see the consultant, and they said it cold take another 2 - 3 months to heal completely.
6 weeks on, and i'm finally eatting properly, and off all pain killers. but still have holes where the wisdom teeth used to be.
It's not a nice time, and I felt I would never get better, but it does ease up. Promise

6 weeks?! Ugh! I don't know if I can last that long. I'm reaching the 2 week mark tomorrow, and the pain is still pretty horrible. >=( Moreover, the stress of it all - the pain, and lack of sleep due to it - is the cause of my recent tension headaches.

In a twisted way, I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing a longer healing process. My coworkers and The Hubby made me think that there was something seriously wrong. I hope it doesn't last as long as 6 weeks. It didn't sound fun for you, and I'm glad you're feeling better.

Thanks for the info.

It wasn't fun.
I was in bed for the first week, and when I went back to work after 1 week off, my co-workers though i should have still been off, due to the swelling still being so bad. [i though the swelling was more or less back to normal, due to the size i was after the op].

but one good thing to come out, is that I had 3 weeks of not really being able to eat anything, so lost a lot of weight...
